17/07/14 Right to Build Scheme

The Self Build sector has been given another boost from the government, which is music to our ears! Right to build scheme launched in the UK by Nick Boles is hopefully the meaningful self build programme the government were after.

The aim of the scheme is to allow self builders to register with local councils who will then offer them a suitable plot of land at market value.

The scheme is to be trialled by a small number of authorities. A full consultation will be held on Right to Build later this year, the DCLG will firm up the right before rolling out the scheme.

Nick Boles said "Building your own home - with or without the help of a local architect and builder - can be much cheaper than buying a new home and offers people the chance to design a place that works for them and their family,"

"Becoming a Right to Build vanguard offers councils a way to help local people get a place to live which is designed and built locally."

This sounds a brilliant scheme and is a great way of giving aspiring self builders greater opportunities to overcome key barriers such as finding land, to help get their scheme off the ground. We work with so many talented and created self builders that we welcome any measures that make life easier!

24/04/2014 An extra 5,000 Self Build Homes promised...

Nick Clegg, deputy prime minister, has announced high quality homes in thriving communities to be built in areas yet to be confirmed.

There are likely to be thousands of new self build homes in the pipeline following the announcement about plans to develop three new garden cities (called this due to the large amount of green space) each with 15,000 homes. It is understood that across the three developments 5,000 self/custom build homes could be built! This move is hoping to tackle the huge housing shortage.

Mr Clegg has said " A steady stream of governments have failed to deal with the problem. Politicians from all sides have given up talking about garden cities - a vision of communities where future generations will live, work, have children, grow up and grow old."

"We have got to do more to tackle Britain's chronic lack of housing, and to build high-quality homes in thriving new communities."

A prospectus has been released for councils interested in developing one of the new cities and they are inviting bids. It is understood that each of these cities should be required by the government to include self build provisions.

These garden cities certainly sound idyllic being surrounded by all that green land and a wonderful opportunity for all you self builders out there, lets see what happens.
