16/11/12 - South West Homebuilding and Renovating Show

We're packing our bags for the final time this autumn, and heading to Somerset for the South West Homebuilding and Renovating Show. Held at the Bath and West Showground at Shepton Mallet, from 17th - 19th November, we are all looking forward to meeting more self-builders, developers and contractors who have come together to see the latest technologies and the finest examples of craftsmanship under one roof.

The two days are packed full of interesting seminars, masterclasses, demonstrations and expert advice. Whether you need advice on how to plan and budget your self build project, to using SIPS panelling and installing rainwater harvesting, this show has something for everyone.

Today is the last day to register for free tickets, so follow this link as soon as you can. Come and see us on stand 311 and receive a warm welcome from the team. Our highly trained expert engineers are on hand to discuss all types of mechanical ventilation, installation, heat recovery systems, ground to air heat exchangers and central vacuum systems.

If you can't make it to the show, or you've missed us at other shows recently, you can always get in touch or email us your plans for a no-obligation quotation.

10/11/12 - Indoor laundry drying 'poses a health risk'

We were fascinated to read Eleanor Bradford’s article this week on the health risks posed by drying laundry indoors. The BBC Scotland Health Correspondent explains…

New research suggests drying laundry in the home poses a health risk to those prone to asthma, hay fever and other allergies. Drying laundry in the home poses a health risk to those prone to asthma, hay fever and other allergies, according to new research. A study carried out by the Mackintosh School of Architecture found that many homes had too much moisture indoors. Up to a third of this moisture was attributed to drying laundry.

The researchers have called on housebuilders to build dedicated drying areas into new housing to address the health concerns. A study of 100 homes by the Mackintosh Environmental Architecture Research Unit in Glasgow found 87% dried their washing indoors in colder weather. Researcher Rosalie Menon said people were not aware how much moisture this added to the air. She said: "Going into people's homes, we found they were drying washing in their living rooms, in their bedrooms. "Some were literally decorating the house with it, but from just one load of washing two litres of water will be emitted."

A total of 75% of households, which were of mixed styles, had moisture levels which could lead to dust mite growth. There was also a strong association between drying laundry and mould spores. A particular mould spore known to cause lung infections in people with weakened immune systems was found in 25% of the homes sampled. The research, funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, was the first to track the implications of drying laundry passively inside the home. All of the types of housing surveyed had a lack of suitable spaces for drying clothes. The researchers want to see dedicated drying areas incorporated into new housing.

Ms Menon said: "These spaces should be independently heated and ventilated. It's very much going back to the airing cupboards we saw in more historical types of housing."
Here at ADM Systems, we understand how damaging high levels of humidity can be in a property. We have a simple solution however, that does not require additional rooms or drying areas.

We would recommend a heat recovery ventilation system as the answer. Our systems can be easily retrofitted into existing property, or incorporated into the design of new build houses. In addition to removing damp, humid air, they can capture up to 90% of the heat that would normally be lost, and use it to warm up incoming fresh, filtered air from outside.

Some facts and figures:

• Asthma affects around one in 12 adults and one in eight children in the UK
• Hay fever tends to occur in allergy-prone families and usually starts in the early teens, with symptoms peaking in the 20s

5/11/2012 - Northern Homebuilding and Renovating Show

We’re just back from another weekend on our show stand. This time we were on home turf at The Harrogate International Centre. As always, we had a great time, and want to thank everyone who came along to see us on both our ADM Systems stand, and our installation partners, Heat Recovery Installations who also exhibited in Harrogate.

We met a great array of people, from those with new build projects from as far away as France and Scotland, to retrofits in Cheshire mansions, plus those adding fabulous new extensions on period properties such as a windmill in Wales and a 1930’s bungalow in a conservation area. Everyone had fascinating stories, with all kinds of architectural challenges for our engineers.

All of the team worked incredibly hard, and put in long hours on the exhibition stands. A big thank you to everyone involved in making it such a successful weekend. We are looking forward to keeping in touch with all the interesting and passionate people we met, and to getting to work on the plans and designs we were given by our visitors.

In two weeks time we hit the road again and head to the South West. The Somerset Homebuilding and Renovating Show takes place at the Bath and West Showground on 17th and 18th November.

We work nationwide, and our highly trained teams will be available to talk to you all about your project, and any aspect of ventilation and heat recovery. If you would like to have some expert advice on heat recovery ventilation systems, or any of our ventilation products, bring your designs along to the Southern Homebuilding and Renovating Show, or send us an email with your plans attached.

28/10/2012 - Big Green Home Show

Just a quick thank you to everyone who attended the Big Green Home Show at Swindon last weekend. We had an excellent time, and met some really interesting people while we were there. It was great to talk to so many enthusiastic and committed self builders who are putting into practice some of the best of creative design ideas, energy efficiency and green living!

Thank you to everyone on the ADM team who worked so hard to make the show a big success too. Our expert staff are always on hand to help, and are delighted to share their knowledge and experience with you. Being independent of any manufacturer means we have access to a huge choice of products, and with our expertise, can apply the range of options to precisely suit your needs.

If you missed this weekend's show, then you can catch us again at The Homebuilding and Renovating Show at the Harrogate International Centre next weekend, from 2nd - 4th November. Follow this link for the free ticket registration! Bring along your plans, or why not email them to us sooner and see how we can help you make your home a cleaner, healthier place.
